Acute infectious thyroiditis is a rare form of thyroiditis[1] directly caused by an infection (usually bacterial).
Although acute infection is rarely present in clinically significant thyroiditis, many other types of thyroiditis have a granulomatous or autoimmune pathophysiology, indicating that there may be a relationship between the condition and a prior infection.
